Тези мигове от миналото идват неочаквано, внезапно и авторът изживява всичко отново и отново след десетилетия. Учудва го появата им по „никое време” с ясните образи на хората, движенията, гласовете, мъката и радостта, с ароматите, светлината или здрача на тогавашния ден.

Ето я потомката на древните ацтеки в църквата „Санта Мария де Гваделупа” в Мексико сити, където свършвайки проповедта, без да се познават, тя му казва тихо: Perdona me.

Изниква и споменът за конкретната дата – 28 август 1943. Смъртта на цар Борис ІІІ, трудовия еврейски лагер в Куртово Конаре, солидния бой в участъка на селото, маларията. Но идва ред и на преживявания, свързани с хубави чувства. Селянин, който знае, че е еврейн и от лагера, му подарява най-зрелите домати и го съветва откъде да върви, за да не го хване полицаят.

В паметта изниква преживяването в Москва, грандиозната премиера на 13-та симфония на Шостакович по текста на „Бабий Яр” на Евтушенко.

Има и още много некраткотрайни мигове от миналото на автора.

Барухиада, или случки от един 90-годишен живот

Срещата е във „Виенската сладкарница” на „Раковски”. Виктор Барух разказва тихо и спокойно случки из своя 90-годишен живот. Това е частица от една уникална Барухиада, пълна с имена, факти, дати и събития. Една от любимите му теми е за Закона за защита на нацията, станалa повод за написването на книгата „Отречени от закона”, със седем издания. Според него проявите на омраза срещу евреите у нас са били организирани от различни организации и нямат спонтанността на уличното насилие. За Виктор Барух антисемитизмът спрямо познатите му хората е бил напълно чужд, или ако го е имало, е налаган със сила. През 1961 г. той присъства на процеса срещу Адолф Айхман. Барух сам пожелава да отиде и да види и се оказва, че е единственият представител на пресата от Източна Европа. „С баща ми сме много близки” – споделя дъщерята Шели. – И всички негови случки от годините преди 1944-та са и мое съпреживяване, което отеква в мен болезнено, защото него го е мъчило”. „Съдбата на баща ми и неговите спомени са допринесли да знаем малко повече от всички останали” – е оценката на сина му Валери.

Moments From the Past

These moments from the past flash upon the author unexpectedly, all of a sudden, and he lives through all the events of old days time and again, after decades. Surprisingly, they come at untimely hours, bringing with them lucid images of people, movements, voices, sorrow and joy; odors, light or dusk of days long past.

Here is the woman whose ancestry goes back to the ancient Aztecs; in the Santa Maria de Guadeloupe Church in Mexico city she whispers to him after the sermon, without knowing him: Perdona me.

Then he remembers that concrete date – August 28^th. 1943. The death of King Boris ІІІ, the Jewish labor camp in Kurtovo Konare, the good thrashing at the village police office, the malaria. But there are also recollections which evoke warm feelings. A peasant who is well aware that the guy he is talking to is a Jew from the camp, offers him his ripest tomatoes and advises him which road to take so that not to be captured by the police.

His memory retraces his Moscow experiences, the impressive first performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 after the poem Babyi Yar by Yevtushenko.

And also other numerous recollections of the past, all of them set firmly in his mind…

Baruchiad, or Episodes from 90 Years of Life

We met in the Wiener coffee shop at Rakovsky str. Victor Baruch narrated in a low, quiet voice episodes from the 90 years of his life – fragments of a unique Baruchiad, full of names, facts, dates and events. One of his favorite themes was the Law for Protection of the Nation; it motivated him to write the book Rejected by Law which underwent seven editions. In his opinion, the manifestations of hostility against the Jews in our country were initiated by different organizations and lacked the spontaneity of street violence. Victor Baruch was convinced that his acquaintances viewed anti-Semitism as a completely alien ideology, or if it ever existed, it was imposed by force. In 1961 he attended the Adolf Eichmann trial. It was his own decision to go and see the trial, and as it turned out, he was the only representative of Eastern European press. “We are very close with my father,  said his daughter Shelly, and it seems to me that all his memories of the past before 1944 are my personal experience and they provoke a burning echo in my heart because they were so painful for him”. “My father’s fate and his recollections are the reason we know a bit more than all the others” – concluded Valery, his son.
